Brooke Ortale's grand slam in game four of the Mavericks series with Fort Lewis College secured the series win over the visiting Skyhawks. CMU (12-7-2, 10-3-1 RMAC) lost game one on Sunday 6-2 to Ft. Lewis (6-13, 4-10 RMAC) but bounced back in game two on Sunday to win 8-3 and take 3 of 4 over FLC.
Ortale's grand slam came in the sixth inning with the Mavericks trailing 3-2. The Skyhawks scored three runs in the top of fifth to erase a 2-0 CMU lead. Jessica Severinsen led off the second inning with a solo homerun over the left field wall. Makayla Kovac led off the fourth with a homerun over the left field wall and the Mavs led 2-0. FLC took the lead in the fifth scoring three runs on five hits.
CMU started the sixth with a walk by Nicole Robinson, followed by a single bunt by Tawnee Woosley. A single by Kovac to shortstop loaded the bases for Ortale's grand slam over the right field wall. CMU scored two more runs in the inning on a pinch hit double down the left field line by Rachel Boothe, scoring Taylor Gross (walk) and Lisa Pille (double).
The Mavericks closed out the victory with a double play in the top of the seventh inning to secure the series win.
Courtney Shreves improved to 4-4 on the year. Shreves allowed three runs on 12 hits and struck out six batters.
Kovac went 3 for 3 in the game and seven Mavericks registered at least one hit in game two.
In game one on Sunday the Skyhawks took advantage of three CMU errors for a 6-2 win. FLC scored six runs, only one earned, on eight hits.
Jessica Severinsen was credited with the loss falling to 8-2 on the year.
CMU will travel to Colorado School of Mines this weekend for two games against the Orediggers and two games versus Metro State University.
