Colorado Mesa softball (11-6-1, 9-2-1 RMAC) swept visiting Ft. Lewis College (5-12, 3-9 RMAC) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bergman Field on Saturday. CMU won game one 7-2 and run-ruled the Skyhawks, 13-2 in game two.
FLC jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring two runs in the top of the second. CMU cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third on an RBI by Makayla Kovac scoring Nicole Robinson (single).
CMU added three runs in the fourth and three in the six for a 7-2 victory. The Mavericks scored three runs on three hits in the fourth on three consecutive hits by Megan Brown (bunt), Nicole Robinson (single) and an RBI pinch hit single by Brooke Ortale.
The Mavericks sixth inning resulted in three runs four hits as CMU's Kovac led-off the inning with on back-to-back homeruns by Kovac and Jessica Severinsen. Lindsay Drayer's RBI triple to right center scored Lisa Pille (single) for the Mavericks.
Severinsen picked up win number eight on the year (8-1). She allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four in seven innings.
Robinson went 3 for 5 and Kovac was 1 of 3 with a game high 3 RBI.
In game two's 13-2 victory the Mavericks scored in three of the four innings they batted; including a six-run second inning and five-run third inning. CMU's first inning included a two-run homerun by Ortale. Kovac's double to right center came with two outs and Ortale's homer gave CMU the early 2-0 lead.
Ft. Lewis answered back with one run in the top of the second on a solo homerun by Hayley Bolyard.
CMU exploded for 11 runs in the next two innings combining for 11 hits, taking advantage of two Skyhawk errors, two wild pitches and one hit batter.
Four Mavericks registered double digit hits while seven batters hit successfully. Ortale was 3 for 3 with four RBI.
Courtney Shreves earned the victory in the five inning game. Shreves went three full innings allowing one run on two hits, zero walks and three strikeouts. Ashley Pulido closed out the final two innings in her first outing since shoulder surgery last summer. Pulido gave up one run on two hits and struck out two batters.
CMU and Ft. Lewis will play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
