Mavericks Fall to Grizzlies 21-18


The Colorado Mesa University wrestling team concluded its two-match road swing tonight against the Adams State Grizzlies in Alamosa, Colo. The Grizzlies forfeited two weights but won six others en route to a 21-18 win over the Mavericks and now have sole possesion of first place in the RMAC dual standings. Colorado Mesa drops to 19-3 on the season and 4-2 in RMAC duals.

The Grizzlies won the first six contested duals of the night in the win. The lone Maverick points came at 141 pounds where Drew Schumann earned a forfeit victory.

For the second consecutive year, Maverick Zak Slotten and Grizzly Jarrod Purrvis decided to have a marathon match. Each wrestler earned an escape in their round of choice and neither could claim points through the first three overtime sessions. In the fourth overtime period, Slotten scored a takedown near the end of the period and earned the win. That closed the Grizzly gap to 21-9 in the dual.

Nick Petersen earned a win at 184 pounds but the decision victory by Petersen clinched the dual for the Grizzlies.

The Mavericks earned a forfeit at 197 pounds to close out the night.

Colorado Mesa will have their final home dual of the season next Saturday in Brownson Arena against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers at 7:00pm
