The Colorado Mesa University wrestling team started its mini two match road swing on Wednesday night with a dual against the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys in Las Vegas, N.M.The Mavericks won the first five matches of the dual en route to a 30-11 win over the Cowboys. With the win, Colorado Mesa is now 19-2 on the season and 5-1 in RMAC duals.
The Mavericks won the first five duals of the night highlighted by a major decision by
Tyler Nelson, a pin by
James Martinez and a techinical fall by
Jon Gappmaier. Nelson defeated Austin Morrow 11-3 at 133 pounds while Martinez picked up his pin over Mariano Montoya at 4:39.
Jon Gappmaier defeated Manuel Sedillo 19-3 and earned the Technical fall.
The match of the night came in the final bout of the night between
Paco Retana and Robert Rockhill. The two competitors couldnt settle anything in regulation and took the match to overtime. After two overtimes,
Paco Retana pinned Rockhill with just one second left in the round to earn the victory.
The Mavericks will take on the Adams State Grizzlies tomorrow night in Alamosa with a chance to win their 20th dual of the season. The dual is scheduled for 7:00pm in Plachy Hall.
