Colorado Mesa Takes Three at Highlands

Game Four called due to weather – Ends in 5-5 Tie

Colorado Mesa (5-4-1, 3-0-1 RMAC) and New Mexico Highlands opened up 2013 RMAC action with the Mavericks taking three games to open the series and the fourth ending in a 5-5 (F/8) tie, called due to inclement weather on Sunday. An attempt to finish the extra-inning game on Monday was called due to snow. 

On Sunday, in game three of the series CMU scored five runs in the first inning and led 6-0 through the top of the first. New Mexico Highlands tied the game scoring four runs in the second and two runs in the third inning to tie the game at 6-6. The two teams combined for 13 hits in the first 3 innings.

The Mavericks took the lead in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Megan Smith and Makayla Kovac. Smith led off the inning with a double, a Kovac double to right center, scored Smith for the go-ahead run and a 7-6 lead.

CMU scored four runs in the sixth inning for an 11-6 lead. Smith's RBI single and Kovac's three-run blast to left center rounded out the scoring in game one of a scheduled doubleheader.

NMHU was held scoreless in the final four innings recording just one hit after registering nine hits in the first three innings.

 Kovac, Smith and Lindsay Drayer tallied multiple hits with Kovac going 3 for 4 with six RBI and two runs scored.

 Jessica Severinsen improved to 4-2 on the year, coming on in relief for the Mavericks. Severinsen pitched the final 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.

Game four of the series the teams were tied 5-5 through seven when the game was postponed due to inclement weather. An attempt to finish the game on Monday was finally canceled due to bad weather.
