Colorado Mesa (4-4, 2-0 RMAC) softball opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at New Mexico Highlands (6-7, 0-2 RMAC) on Saturday afternoon. CMU swept the Cowgirls in back-to-back extra inning games winning 10-8 (11 innings) and 5-3 (8 innings).
In game one the two teams combined for 29 hits and 18 runs as the Mavericks prevailed in the four-hour game. Tied at 7-7 after seven innings the two teams remained scoreless into the 10th inning where International Rules came into effect. With a runner placed on second base (Jessica Severinsen) a single bunt by Taylor Gross moved Severinsen to third. Two batters later a double by Rachel Boothe scored Severinsen for an 8-7 lead. CMU's threat came to an end on a Runner Left Early call and ground out.
NMHU answered back in the bottom of the 10th scoring a run on one hit and aided by a CMU throwing error.
In the 11th the Mavericks aggressive base running, including three stolen bases, led to two runs on one hit as CMU took a 10-8 lead off a RBI single by Makayla Kovac.
Highlands led off the inning with a single advancing the runner to third before CMU's Severinsen set down the side with two groundouts and pop up for a 10-8 victory.
Jessica Severinsen picked up win number two on the year. Severinsen went 2 for 4 from the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Taylor Gross went 4 for 6 from the plate with one run and one RBI. Makayla Kovac recorded three hits and two RBI and Rachel Boothe finished with two hits and two RBI.
Game two the Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a run in the first and third inning with an RBI single by Lisa Pille in the first inning and RBI double by Taylor Gross in the third.
Highlands tied the game 2-2 in the bottom half of the fifth on four hits; three singles and a two-run double.
The teams remained tied heading in to the eighth inning when CMU put together a two-out rally scoring three runs on three hits to take a 5-2 lead.
The Cowgirls scored one run in the bottom frame to pull to within 5-3 but CMU's Severinsen earned her third victory of the year striking out Highlands' Paige Medina to end the game.
Nicole Robinson and Makayla Kovac combined for five hits, three RBI and two runs.
Jessica Severinsen pitched the final 3.2 innings allowing one run on four hits and striking out two Highlands batters.
CMU and NMHU will close out the four-game series on Sunday. The scheduled doubleheader begins at 11 a.m.
