CMU Drops Season Opener to Regis 16-6

Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon at Walker Field hosting Regis University. The Rangers, picked to finish second in the coaches' preseason poll, defeated CMU 16-6 in Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (WILA) action.

The Mavericks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead scoring twice in the first 40-seconds of the contest. Allie Henderson scored on the first possession of the game and scored unassisted at the 29:44 mark. Ashley Eickoff followed up on the next possession with her first collegiate goal (29:22) for a 2-0 CMU lead.

Regis answered back with four consecutive goals in a 10-minute time span to take a 4-2 lead. CMU closed the gap to 3-4 on a goal by Lexie Chavez (Amanda Simon assist) with 14:07 remaining in the first half. Regis again went on a run of three straight goals and a 7-3 advantage. Lexie Chavez notched her second goal of the day with 30-seconds left in the half off a pass from Ashley Eickoff, ending the first half, down 7-4.

The Rangers opened the second half with two goals, including a man-up goal, for a 9-4 lead. Allie Henderson scored her second goal of the day with 23:33 remaining to pull CMU to within four, 5-9.

Regis went on their second four-goal spurt of the day, stretching the lead to 13-5 with 7:24 left in the game. Lexie Chavez tallied her third goal on the day at the 3:49 mark, cutting the deficit to 13-6. Regis would close out the game on three straight goals in the final 2:01 for the 16-6 victory.

Lexie Chavez led CMU with three goals on six shots. Allie Henderson finished with two goals on three shots and Ashley Eickoff recorded one goal and one assist in her CMU debut.

Regis totaled 32 shots and was 11 of 16 on clears. CMU tallied 17 shots and finished 12 of 19 on clears. The two teams combined for 36 turnovers (Regis 17, CMU 19) and each goalkeeper registered three saves each.

CMU will host Fort Lewis College on Friday, February 22 at 4 p.m. on Walker Field.
