Mavericks Go 4-0 in the Midwest Duals


The Colorado Mesa University Wrestling team competed in the Midwest Duals hosted by Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney, Neb. on Saturday. The Mavericks picked up four wins and moved their overall dual record to 15-1 and 3-0 in duals against RMAC schools.

#10 Colorado Mesa 21, #15 Fort Hays State 15 (Results)
The 10th ranked Mavericks won seven of the ten duals and picked up a 21-15 win over the 15th ranked Tigers. CMU won four of the first five matches of the dual to jump out to a 12-3 lead and hung on in the final five matches of the dual.

James Martinez picked up a huge win at 149 pounds defeating previously ranked Tiger Mitchell Means 4-3 while Drew Schumann dropped a close match to nationally ranked CJ Napier 3-1 at 141 pounds.

#10 Colorado Mesa 44, Newman 3 (Results)
Colorado Mesa won nine of the ten matches in a 44-3 thumping of the Newman Jets. The Mavericks picked up four pins, a tech fall and received a forfeit in the dual.

Drew Schumann, James Martinez, Jordan Passehl and Paco Retana all picked up wins by fall in the dual while Dylan Granard won his match by technical fall 17-2.

The lone loss in the dual came from previously undefeated and second ranked Jon Gappmaier at 157 pounds. Gappmaier fell to Colton Duhr 9-2.

#10 Colorado Mesa 30, Colby CC 11 (Results)
The Mavericks improved to 3-0 in the Midwest duals after a 30-11 victory over Colby CC. Five of the Mavericks six wins came for bonus points including two by pins.

Justin Schumacher picked up a pin by pinning Brandon Vasquez in 2:00 minutes while Nick Petersen picked up his first pin of the duals, defeating Dylon Braun in 2:59.

#10 Colorado Mesa 21, San Francisco State 18 (Results)
Colorado Mesa picked up a key 21-18 win over RMAC affiliate member San Francisco State in their final dual of the day. The two teams split the ten matches but the Mavericks picked up two pins late in the dual to seal the match.

Zak Slotten picked up the first one at 174 pounds pinning Alex Simon in 4:52 while Nick Petersen followed that up with a pin of Calvin Nicholls in 53 seconds at 184 pounds.

The Mavericks had three wrestlers finish the Midwest Duals undefeated. Jonathon Stelling at 125 pounds, Zak Slotten at 174 pounds and Nick Petersen at 184 pounds all finished the duals 4-0.

CMU will be on the road for a dual against the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves on Wednesday before returning home for a dual on Thursday with Division I Northern Colorado in Brownson Arena. Thursday's dual starts at 7:00pm
