The Colorado Mesa University Wrestling team traveled to Chadron, Neb. to take on the Chadron State Eagles. The Mavericks won seven of the ten matches en route to a 24-9 victory over Chadron State. CMU improves to 11-1 on the season and 1-0 in the RMAC in dual matches while Chadron drops to 4-4 in duals and 1-1 in RMAC duals.
The Eagles started the dual off on a hot note. After freshman
Jonathon Stelling picked up a win at 125, Chadron State picked up wins at 133 and 141 pounds to take a 6-3 lead.
The lead wouldnt last for long as Colorado Mesa won the next six matches highlighted by
James Martinez' pin at 149 pounds. Martinez pinned the Eagles Reed Burgener at the 2:29 mark in the first period and was the lone bonus point match of the dual.
The duo of
Jon Gappmaier and
Dylan Granard picked up wins at 157 and 165 pounds to extend the Maverick lead. Gappmaier defeated Bruce Zurek 7-4 to remain undefeated on the season at 7-0. Granard defeated Dylan Fors 4-3 and improved to 12-3 on the season.
Both Gappmaier and Granard were ranked in the most recent NWCA National Rankings released on Wednesday. Gappmaier is the #2 ranked wrestler at 157 pounds while Granard reappeared at #8 at 165 pounds.
Both
Zak Slotten and
Nick Petersen picked up decision victories at 174 and 184 pounds respectively.
Chadron State's Michael Hill picked up the win in the final match of the night. Hill defeated
Paco Retana 7-2 in the 285 pound match.
The Mavericks were ranked #10 in the NWCA National Rankings that were released on Wednesday and will put their record and ranking on the line on Saturday when they take on 15th ranked Fort Hays, RMAC foe San Francisco State, Colby CC, and Newman University. The UNK Loper Duals will begin at 8:00am Mountain Time on Saturday.
