The Colorado Mesa University had their first home meet since the second week of the season tonight as they took on the Cal Baptist Lancers in Brownson Arena. The Mavericks came into the dual ranked 14th in the latest NWCA poll while the Lancers are in their final year with the NCWA before becoming an official NCAA member.
The Lancers came out and picked up two pins in the first three matches and took an early 12-3 lead in the dual. The Mavericks came storming back winning the next five matches including pins by
Justin Schumacher at 149 pounds and
Dylan Granard at 165 pounds.
All-American
Nick Petersen fell 5-2 in his match at 184 pounds to cut the Maverick lead to just six points which setup
Jordan Passehl at 197 pounds.
Passehl came into the bout having just three matches under his belt this season. In the first period, Jordan got an early takedown but Lancer David Dill scrambled for an escape and threw Passehl to his back. Passehl was on his back for nearly two minutes but managed to escape. In the waining seconds of the third period, Passehl knotted the match at 8-8. In the overtime session, Jordan nearly scored a takedown but the referee said they were off the mat but just 10 seconds later Passehl scored a takedown and earned the 10-8 overtime win.
The Mavericks improved to 7-1 on the season heading into this weekend's Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison while the Lancers fall to 3-6 and will also compete this weekend in Gunnison.
Colorado Mesa will be on the road next week but will return the following week to take on the Northern Colorado Bears, a NCAA Division I school.
