Women's Soccer Preview - Midwestern State & West Texas A&M

The Mavericks will open the regular season with two key South Central Region matches. They will open the season at the Midwestern State Classic with a neutral site match against West Texas A&M and finish with a match against Midwestern State. Here is a preview of this weekends upcoming matches.

About West Texas A&M: The Lady Buffs are coming off a season where they finished 9-10-1 and were 5-8-1 in the Lone Star Conference. They had big wins over Midwestern State during the regular season and upset 3rd seeded Eastern New Mexico in the Lone Star Conference Tournament. They also defeated RMAC foe New Mexico Highlands 1-0 in the early part of the season.

The Lady Buffs were picked to finish 6th behind perennial powers Midwestern State and Abilene Christian.

West Texas A&M Player to Watch: Junior Berklee Watson is the Lady Buffs top returning scorer. She was an All-Lone Star Conference 2nd Team performer a year ago where she scored 3 goals, including the game-winner over New Mexico Highlands.

About Midwestern State: The Mustangs are coming off a 14-6-2 year in 2011 where they made the NCAA Tournament. MSU defeated St. Edward's 1-0 in the opening round of the tournament before being bounced in the 2nd round by fellow Lone Star Confernce foe and 17th ranked Abilene Christian 2-1 in OT.

Midwestern State was the coach's pick to win the Lone Star Conference this season.

Midwestern State Player to Watch: The Mustangs return 2010 All-South Central Region Goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth for the 2012 campaign. Whitworth was a 2011 2nd Team All-Lone Star Conference selection and had a 0.72 GAA and an 83.8 save percentage including a 2-1 win over then unbeaten Abilene Christian in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Title match.

Whitworth was named the Lone Star Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
