Mavericks and Mustangs split Saturday Doubleheader

Colorado Mesa (22-14, 20-12 RMAC) softball split Saturday's doubleheader with visiting Western New Mexico (14-31, 9-23 RMAC) winning game one 9-1 (6 innings) and dropping game two 15-10.

Lisa Pille went 3 for 3 with two homeruns and one double, scoring twice and knocking in four of the Mavs' nine runs in game one. CMU scored three runs in the first, two runs in the second and four runs in the sixth.

Courtney Maihi ended the game in the sixth on a walk-off three-run blast to left center to run-rule the Mustangs, 9-1. Maihi picked up win number 13 (13-6) pitching a complete game, allowing one (unearned) on four hits, four walks and four strikeouts.

In game two the Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead and CMU tied the game at 4-4 through two complete innings. WNMU scored two in the third and allowed a Mav run in the bottom half to hold a 6-5 WNMU lead. The Mustangs exploded for seven runs in the fifth on seven hits. CMU got one run back in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 13-6. WNMU added two more in the sixth for a 15-6 lead. CMU put four on the board to close the deficit to 15-10. After a scoreless seventh for the Mustangs the Mavs had a base-runner in the seventh but failed to score a run and closed out the four-game series with a loss.

Ashley Pulido falls to 6-9 on the year allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks. Maihi closed out the final 2.2 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

CMU will close out the regular home season next weekend versus University of Neb.-Kearney. The four game series will begin Saturday at Noon.
