The Colorado Mesa University Women's Lacrosse team took on the Lindenwood Lions on Sunday in what would be the last game of the season for the Mavericks as they finished their second year at the D-II level. It was a rough day for the Mavs as they dropped the final game of the season 19-7 to close out the year with a record of 3-11 (2-6 WILA) in what was the last game for the lone senior on the squad,
Myka Wiebe.
The Lions struck first in the contest with their goal coming only 26 seconds into the game; the Mavs would respond quickly, though as they got on the board with a goal of their own coming 41 seconds later to make the score 1-1 at 28:53 in the first half. That would be the closest the Mavs would get, however, as the Lions rallied off 4 goals with the last at 18:43 to go up 5-1 before the Mavs finally broke their drought with 3:32 left in the first to make the score 5-2. The Lions would add two more to their total before the break that would leave the score at 7-2 heading into the second.
The Mavs would find the back of the net first in the second half with a goal coming at 29:14 that would make the score 7-3; but it made little difference as the Lions kept up their offensive and defensive pressure which saw them to a 15-2 (8-0) record on the year as they went on another 4 goal run to go up 11-3 with 24:49 left in the game. The Mavs showed they wouldn't stop fighting, as they have all year, with another goal at 20:33 to make the score 11-4; but the Lions were too powerful as they went on their 3rd 4-goal run of the game to leave the score at 16-4 with 15:55 left in the game. It was as this point that the Mavs and the Lions traded goals back and forth that lasted until the end of the game and would make the score 19-7 final.
Allie Henderson led the offensive effort for the Mavs as she finished with 2 goals on 4 shots with 1 groundball; Henderson was aided by
Rachael Sutton who finished the game with 1 goal on 2 shots with 2 assists, 2 groundballs and 7 draw controls.
Lauren Elliott,
Lexie Chavez,
Amanda Simon, and Melissa Neidfelt would also contribute as each had 1 goal for the Mavs.
Elliott also led the defensive effort for the Mavs as she finished with 1 assist and 6 groundballs in addition to her lone goal coming off a free position attempt; Wiebe also played well for the Mavs on the defensive side of the field as she finished the game with 4 groundballs.
Lauren Wells spent the entire game in the net as she earned the decision while grabbing 3 groundballs and stopping 7 shots.
