Mavs Fall in Extra Innings to Ft. Lewis 4-3

Colorado Mesa (26-21) dropped its first game of the RMAC Softball Championship Tournament losing to Fort Lewis College 4-3 in extra innings on Saturday afternoon in Golden, CO. The Mavericks and Skyhawks were the only two undefeated teams left in the double-elimination tournament. CMU will now face Colorado Christian in an elimination game on Saturday at 11 am. The winner will advance to the championship game and will need to beat Fort Lewis twice to win the title.

CMU scored in the top of the first on an RBI single by Courtney Maihi, scoring Danielle Vallie (walk) for an early 1-0 lead. The Skyhawks answered right back in the bottom half scoring two runs off a homerun by Chelsea Rodriguez.

CMU tied the game at 2-2 in the second on an RBI double by Shannon McClenahan to score Brooke Ortale (single). The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth when the Skyhawks took a 3-2 lead scoring one run on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.

Courtney Maihi tied the score at 3-3 in the sixth with a lead-off homerun to centerfield.

In the seventh inning each team threatened with runners on second and third before being set down. CMU went down in order in the top of the eighth. In the Skyhawks eighth they loaded the bases on two singles and an intentionally walk. Ft. Lewis scored the winning run on a wild pitch to win the extra inning game 4-3.

Courtney Maihi (13-11) allowed four runs on nine hits, walked three and hit three batters.  Maihi went 2 for 3 from the plate with two RBI and a homerun. Brooke Ortale was 2 for 4.
