Colorado Mesa (24-20, 22-18 RMAC) dropped its final regular season doubleheader at Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, falling 7-2 in game one and 11-10 in game two. With the two losses on Sunday the Mavericks enter the RMAC Softball Tournament at the #8 seed and will face #1 seed and host, Colorado School of Mines. The double elimination tournament begins Thursday morning in Golden. The winner of the RMAC tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament.
In game one the Mavericks fell behind 4-0 after one inning as the Orediggers took advantage of two CMU errors in the inning. CMU put up a run in the fourth and the Orediggers answered back in the bottom half with one run to lead 5-1. Colorado Mines added two in the sixth for a 7-1 lead and the Mavericks scored an un-earned run in the seventh before Mines closed out the game winning 7-2.
CMU was trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth when the game was delayed for close to two hours on a CMU protest. Following a ruling from the NCAA in CMU's favor, the game resumed.
In game two the Mavericks and Orediggers each scored two runs in the first and CMU put up five runs in the second. Colorado Mines scored four runs in the bottom of the second and trailed CMU 6-7 after two. The Orediggers tied the score in the third (7-7) and scored four in the fifth for an 11-7 lead. CMU put up three in the sixth to trail 11-10. CMU loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs but the Orediggers closed out the game with a strikeout.
CMU will play Colorado Mines in the opening round of the RMAC Softball Championship Tournament which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday in Golden. CMU enters the eight-team tournament as the #8 seed and will play #1 seed Colorado Mines.
