Colorado Mesa (24-18, 22-16 RMAC) split a pair of games on Saturday at Colorado School of Mines (27-22, 24-14 RMAC) in a doubleheader falling 6-3 in game one and winning game two 4-3.
In game one the Orediggers took a 2-0 lead in to the top of the third inning when the Mavs' Courtney Maihi hit a solo homerun to left field to cut the Oredigger lead in half (1-2). CMU tied the score in the third on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Vallie to score Lita Romero (single).
Colorado Mines put up four runs in the fourth including a three-run homerun to take a 6-2 lead. CMU added a run in the seventh off a two-out double by Lindsay Drayer.
Courtney Maihi falls to 13-9 with the loss giving up six runs (5 earned) on 11 hits, five walks and four strikeouts.
In game two the Orediggers again jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring two in the bottom of the third. CMU's Maihi hit her second solo shot of the day in the top of the fourth and the Mavs tied the game on a Lita Romero single to score Megan Smith (double). Jessica Albertson's single to score Mackenzy Derrick (single) and the Mavs closed out the fourth inning with a 3-2 lead.
The Orediggers tied the game in the sixth on an unearned run on a throwing error. CMU scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. The inning started with a single by Vallie, Maihi walked and Megan Smith walked. Lisa Pille was hit by a pitch and the Mavs took a 4-3 lead. Colorado Mines set down the next two batters to close out the inning.
Starting pitcher Ashley Pulido allowed a two-out single before retiring the final batter on a strike out swinging for her eighth victory on the year. Pulido allowed two earned runs on 10 hits, walked just one and struck out six Orediggers.
CMU and Colorado Mines will close out the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 11 am.
