The Colorado Mesa University Women's lacrosse took on the Colorado College Tigers on Saturday, as the Mavs continued their second season in D-II lacrosse. It was another tough loss for the Mavs as they fell into a hole early and couldn't recover as they fell to 3-9 on the season.
The Tigers opened up the match on a 5 goal run before the Mavs went on a 3 goal run of their own to make the score 5-3 with 6:39 remaining in the first half; the Tigers would add one more to their total before the break to make the score 5-4 heading into the second half.
The Mavs were able to keep it close early in the second half as they traded goals with the Tigers to make the score 8-6 with 18:53 remaining in the game. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Mavs would get as the Tigers went on a 7-1 run stretched out to the end of the game to make the score 15-7 final.
Rachael Sutton led the offensive effort for the Mavs as she finished the game with 4 goals on 6 shots with 1 assist, 1 groundball, 4 draw controls, and 1 caused turnover. Allie Henderson and Lexie Chavez also contributed as both had 1 goal and 1 assist, as Henderson added 2 draw controls while Chavez added 1 draw control. Kate Diamond also had a good day as she finished with 1 goal on 3 shots with 3 groundballs and 2 draw controls.
Morgan Nance led the defensive effort as she finished with 2 groundballs and 2 caused turnovers. Nance was aided by Myka Wiebe as Wiebe finished with 5 groundballs and 1 caused turnover. Lauren Wells spent the entire game in the net as she earned the decision after stopping 10 shots.
The Mavs continue their season next Sunday when they travel to Denver to take on the Regis University Rangers in a WILA conference game.
