The Colorado Mesa University Men's lacrosse team took on non-conference opponent Shorter University on Saturday as the Mavericks continued their second season in D-II lacrosse. It was a good rebound game for the Mavs as they defeated the Hawks 13-5 to go up 8-4 on the season.
The Mavs struck early and often against the Hawks as the Mavs led off the game with a 4-0 run that started with Austin Pridham at 14:33, followed by Griffin Perkiel at 13:15, trailed by Jeremy Best at 12:31, and concluded with Kade Robinson at 7:02. The Hawks were able to get on the board with a goal of their own with 5:22 left in the first but the Mavs would not let them build any momentum as Robinson added a second goal to his total with 43 second left in the first. The Mavs kept the pressure up in the second quarter as they went on another 4-0 run starting with a man-up goal from Daniel Caddoo at 12:51, shadowed by a goal from Michael Giffen at 7:49, followed by a goal from Dillon Bernad at 7:10, and finished off with Robinson's third goal at 5:26 to make the score 9-1. The Hawks would add a pair of goals to their total before the half was up to make the score 9-3 going into the break.
The Mavs carried over the effort from the first half into the second as Bernad and Caddoo added 2 more goals with 5:22 remaining before the Hawks would add one more of their own to make the score 11-4 heading into the final quarter. Caddoo would add another goal to his total giving him another hat trick on the season with 8:15 remaining to before the Hawks added one more to theirs to make the score 12-5 with 4:46 remaining. Shane O'Neill would top the day off for the Mavs as he found the back of the net with 54 second remaining in the game to make the score 13-5 final.
Robinson and Caddoo led the offensive effort for the Mavs as they both had 3 goals on the day as Robinson was able to add 2 assists and 2 groundballs to his total while Caddoo had 1 caused turnover. Bernad also helped as he finished with 2 goals on 4 shots with 3 groundballs. Zach Weaver got the start in the goal for the Mavs as he earned the decision while stopping 10 shots.
The Mavs conclude their season on the 28th when the travel to Alamosa, Colorado, as they take on the Adams State Grizzlies in a WILA conference game.
