The Colorado Mesa University Women's Lacrosse team took on the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on Friday, as the Mavs begin to wrap up their second season in D-II lacrosse. It was a rough day as the loss to the Skyhawks dropped the Mavs to 3-8, 2-4 WILA, on the season.
The Mavs were victims of the powerful Skyhawk offense as the Mavs found themselves in a 8-0 hole midway through the first half before they finally rallied off 4 goals of their own to make the score 8-4 with 2:33 left in the half. Fort Lewis, however, would get the last goal in the first that came as time was expiring to leave the Mavs in a 9-4 deficit.
The second half didn't go any easier for the Mavs as the Skyhawks added two more quick goals to their total before the Mavs added one of their own to make the score 11-5 with 25:32 remaining. Fort Lewis would keep piling on, though, as they went on a 6-1 run to leave the Mavs down 17-6 with 7:43 remaining in the game. The Mavs demonstrated that they could still fight despite their youth and were able to add two more goals before the Skyhawks capped off two more to make the score 19-8 final.
Lexie Chavez led the offensive effort for the Mavs as she finished the game with 3 goals (2 from free position attempts) on 4 shots with 4 draw controls. Chavez was aided by Kate Diamond and Rachael Sutton as Diamond finished with 2 goals on 3 shots with one goal coming from a free position shot, and Sutton finished with 2 goals on 4 shots with 2 draw controls. Allie Henderson would also contribute as she had 1 goal on 2 shots with 1 assist, 1 groundball, 2 draw controls, and 1 caused turnover.
Lauren Elliott led the defensive effort as she totaled 6 groundballs and 4 caused turnovers. Elliott was aided by Morgan Nance and Myka Wiebe as Nance finished with 3 caused turnovers and 3 groundballs and Wiebe finished with 2 caused turnovers and 2 groundballs. Lauren Wells Spent the entire game in the net as she earned the decision after stopping 16 shots that came her way.
The Mavs continue their season on Saturday when they take on the Colorado College Tigers at a neutral site game in Durango, Colorado.
