The Colorado Mesa University Women's lacrosse team took on the Adams State College Grizzlies on Saturday as the Mavs continue their second season in D-II lacrosse. It was a good day for the Mavs as they defeated the Grizzlies to improve their record to 3-6 (2-3 WILA).
The Grizzlies were able to take an early 2-0 lead, but it was short lived as the Mavs scored three quick goals of their own to go up 3-2 with 21:48 remaining in the first half. For the rest of the period the Mavs and Grizzlies traded goals back and forth to keep the score tied 7-7 at the break.
The second half was all about the Mavs.
After both teams again traded goals to leave the score tied 9-9 with 24:29 left in the game, the Mavs went on a nine goal run that ended at 8:22 that saw them up 18-9. The Grizzlies would continue to close the gap but it proved to be too little too late as the Mavs stayed one step ahead until the end of the game to make the score 20-14 final.
The offensive effort was spearheaded by Lexie Chavez as she led the Mavericks with 5 goals on 8 shots with 2 assists, 1 groundball, 1 draw control and 1 caused turnover. Allie Henderson and Rachael Sutton both had 4 goals apiece as Henderson added 3 assists, 3 groundballs, and 5 draw controls to her total, and Sutton added 1 assist, 4 groundballs, 10 draw controls and 3 caused turnovers to her total. Keri Kopchik rounded out the Maverick effort with 3 goals on 3 shots with 1 groundball and 1 draw control.
Other Mavericks contributing include Tayler Lansdown with 2 goals and 2 draw controls; Melissa Niedfelt with 1 goal, 1 assist, 1 groundball, and 1 draw control; and Lauren Elliott with 1 goal, 4 groundballs, and 1 caused turnover.
Lauren Wells spent the entire game in the goal as she stopped 17 shots en route to earning the decision.
The Mavericks continue their season on April 6th as they take on the Westminster College Griffins at Walker Field.
