Mavs split Sunday DH, Split Series vs. Chadron

Colorado Mesa (19-13, 17-11 RMAC) split for the second consecutive day on Sunday at Chadron State, falling in game one 5-3 and holding off the Eagles for a 6-5 game four victory.

In game one CMU took a 2-0 lead scoring a run in second and third inning on RBI singles by Tawnee Woosley in the second and Lita Romero scored (unearned) in the top of the third on an Eagle error.

The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the third and CMU tied the game at 3-3 in the top half of the fourth on an unearned run scored by Brooke Ortale.

Chadron added a run in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly for a 5-3 lead. CMU registered a hit in the seventh after Megan Smith was hit by a pitch to start the inning. With runners on first and third the Mavs lined out to the second baseman, dropping game three of a four-game set 5-3.

Ashley Pulido went 6.0 innings allowing five runs on 11 hits and striking out two.

Ortale went 3 for 4 following a start in left field. Danielle Vallie and Woosley each finished with two hits.

In the series finale the Mavericks broke a 5-5 tie scoring the winning run in the seventh for a 6-5 win to salvage a series split.  

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth Lisa Pille's grand slam pushed the Mavs ahead 5-2 lead. Pille hit a grand slam on Saturday in the Mavs game one win. The Eagles answered right back in their half of the inning tying the game at 5 -5 with three runs on two hits and two CMU errors.

After a scoreless sixth the Mavericks put up what proved to be the winning run in the seventh on a bases loaded, fielder's-choice scoring Lindsay Drayer (pinch ran for Maihi).

Ashley Pulido came on in relief for her fifth (5-6) victory on the year. She pitched a scoreless 3.0 inning allowing just one hit and striking out two.

CMU will host Western New Mexico in a four –game set beginning Friday at Bergman Field at 3/5 pm. The two teams will close out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 am.
