Mavericks Fall to Penguins

Box Score

The Colorado Mesa University Men's lacrosse team took on the Dominican University Penguins on Friday as the Mavericks continued their second season in D-II lacrosse.  It was a rough day for the Mavericks as they lost their first WILA game to drop them to 5-3 (3-1 WILA) on the season.

The Mavericks seemed in control early as a three goal burst starting at 12:23 from Kade Robinson, followed at 8:22 from Trace Wollner, and capped off at 5:07 from Austin Pridham put them up 3-0 through most of the first quarter.  The Penguins would not go away easily, however, as their first goal of the game came with 2:08 left in the first to leave the Mavs in front 3-1 through the first quarter of action.  The Mavs looked to pad their lead as a goal from James Sharp at 12:47 put them ahead 4-1 before a Penguin goal at 10:38 kept the score close at 4-2. Josh Russell would add to the total shortly after at 10:01 to keep the Mavericks on top 5-2, but another Penguin goal at 6:22 once again kept the score close at 5-3 heading into the break.

The third quarter is where things started to go bad as the Penguins broke the game open after a four goal bust saw the Mavericks down in the score 7-5 with 6:47 remaining in the quarter.  The Mavericks would show their resilience, though, after they answered with two quick goals of their own at 4:39 from Aaron Eggiman and at 4:07 from Griffin Perkiel to tie the score at 7-7 heading into the final quarter.  The Mavs were able to regain the lead at 13:40 after Robinson's second goal of the game put them in front 8-7, but their lead would not last long as the Penguins rallied off three unanswered goals to put the Mavs back down 10-8 with 9:53 remaining in the game.  A goal at 9:37 from Shane O'Neill would see the Mavericks keeping the game close at 10-9, but it would be their last gasp as the Penguins decided to shut the door for good after another three goal burst to end the game made the score 13-9 final.

Robinson and Russell would lead the Maverick attack as Robinson finished with 2 goals on 5 shots with 1 groundball and Russell finished with 1 goal on 1 shot with 2 groundballs and 1 caused turnover.

Brad Brandenburg and Zach Weaver split time in the net as Brandenburg picked up 3 saves in the first half and Weaver picked up 6 saves in the second half and also earned the decision.

The Mavericks continue their season on Sunday when they look to sweep the season series from the Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts in Belmont, California.
