Mavs at NM Highlands split four-game series

Colorado Mesa (8-4, 6-2 RMAC) split their four game series at New Mexico Highlands winning game one on Sunday, 11-6 before falling in the series finale, 7-4.

In game one of Sunday's doubleheader, CMU scored two runs in the top of the first with an RBI single to right field by Jessica Alberton scoring Taylor Gross  (lead -off single/stole second). Gross advanced to third on two passed balls and scored on Courtney Maihi's sacrifice fly. The Mavericks added to the lead in the fourth on a two-run homerun by Maihi, scoring Lauren Cross (single).

NMHU got on the board with a leadoff homerun by Shelby Watts to close the gap to 1-4. CMU extended the lead to 8-1 in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs. Lisa Pille hit a sacrifice fly with bases loaded to score Lauren Cross (single). Shannon McClenahan's two-out single to left field scored Megan Smith (single). A bases loaded pass ball scored Lita Romero (fielder's choice) and Jessica Albertson reached on an error by the pitcher scoring McClenahan.

NMHU scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth (3-8) and CMU answered back with three runs in the top of the seventh on a solo homerun by Cross, an RBI double by Lisa Pille and RBI single by McClenahan pushed the lead to 11-3. NMHU climbed back to 11-6 on a three run blast by Erica Wieck before CMU closed out the game on a ground out back to the pitcher.

Courtney Maihi earned the complete game victory allowing six runs (5 earned) on five hits. Maihi walked four batters and struck out one.  

NMHU opened game two scoring two runs in each of the first and second innings for a 4-1 lead. CMU scored one run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Shannon McClenahan scoring Courtney Maihi (double). The Mavs cut the deficit in half on a run in the fourth on a solo shot by Maihi. In the fifth CMU pulled to within one (3-4) with Lita Romero scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. Romero singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a ground out.

Highlands scored two in their half of the fifth off a two-run homerun by Brittany Potter and added one in the sixth for a 7-3 lead. Pille's triple in the seventh, scoring on the relay added CMU's final run, falling 7-4, and wrapping up the weekend split.

Starter Catherine Floyd allowed four runs on seven hits in the opening inning and was credited with the loss. Ashley Pulido pitched 5.0 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, while recording three strikeouts.

CMU will host Fort. Lewis College this Wednesday in a doubleheader at Bergman Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. This Saturday and Sunday the Mavericks will host Black Hills State at Bergman Field.
