Mavs notch victory over Adams State 16-9

The Colorado Mesa University Women's Lacrosse team took on Adams State College on Saturday in a WILA Conference matchup, the game was rescheduled from Friday due to inclement weather affecting playing conditions.

The Mavs finally got their first win of the season with a final score of 16-9 as they were led by leading scorer Rachael Sutton.  Sutton led the Mavs with four goals on nine shots while also picking up five groundballs and winning seven draw controls.

Sutton was part of the strong offensive display for the Mavs as they have finally found their groove.  Amanda Simon and Lexie Chavez each had three goals apiece as Simon also tallied one assist and two groundballs and Chavez picked up seven groundballs and 3 draw controls.  Allie Henderson also had a good day as she scored two goals on eleven shots with three groundballs and five draw controls.  The other Mavericks with goals were Keri Kopchik, Lauren Elliott, Tayler Lansdown, and Morgan Nance who all earned one goal.

Lauren Wells earned her first win of the season as she spent the entire game in goal and stopped four shots.

The Mavs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with two goals coming in the first minute of the game; Adams State got off two goals of their own that were one minute apart before the Mavs scored four unanswered goals to go up 7-2 with 7:12 remaining in the first half.  The Grizzlies scored once more as the Mavs added two goals at the end of the half to go up 9-3 heading into the second half.

The Mavs traded goals with the Grizzlies during the second half which was full of yellow cards by each team; seven yellow cards were called in the second half as twelve were called over the course of the game.

The Mavericks continue their season on March 11th when they travel to Painesville, Ohio to take on the Lake Erie College Storm.
