Mavs split road doubleheader at Chadron State

Colorado Mesa (18-12, 16-10 RMAC) split Saturday's doubleheader at Chadron State (12-21, 10-14 RMAC) winning game one 12-6 and falling in game two, 4-2 on a walk-off two run blast in the bottom of the seventh.

In game one Chadron jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a single and back-to-back doubles for the early lead. CMU answered right back in the top of the second, taking advantaged of three walks and a grand slam by Lisa Pille for a 4-2 lead. The Mavs added a run in the third on an RBI single by Megan Smith scoring Danielle Vallie (hit by pitch).

In the Eagles bottom half of the third the Eagles added four runs with a three-run homerun by and solo homerun for a 6-5 lead.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning for each team the Mavericks surpassed their run output in the second by adding five runs on six hits in the sixth for a 10-6 advantage.  Lisa Pille started off the inning with a triple and singles by Lita Romero, Jessica Albertson, Vallie, Courtney Maihi  and a double by Megan Smith pushed the Mavs's hit total to 12.

CMU added two unearned runs on one hit in the seventh and held the Eagles hitless in the bottom of the seventh for a 12-6 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

Five players registered multiple hits; Courtney Maihi, Megan Smith, Lisa Pille, Lita Romero and Lauren Cross. Maihi and Pille combined for seven RBI and Cross went 2 for 3 in her first game back in three weeks.

In game two the Eagles won 4-2 after trailing 2-1 heading in to the bottom of the seventh. CMU took a 2-1 lead after five with all three runs coming in the fifth inning. Courtney Maihi's two-run RBI single up the middle in the fifth inning scored Taylor Gross (single) and Jessica Albertson (walk). The Eagles cut the deficit in half on an unearned run.

The 2-1 lead stood until the bottom of the seventh when the Eagles tied the game at 2-2 on an unearned run scored by Brittany Chacon (single). Chacon advanced to second on a wild pitch and advanced to a third on a ground out for the Eagles second out of the game. Chacon scored when Katie Londo reached on an error. Next batter up; Amy Schartz's homerun to left center ended the game.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 am.
