The Colorado Mesa University Women's lacrosse team took on the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks on Saturday, as the Mavericks continued their second season in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. It was a rough day for the Mavericks as they ended up losing a tough one to the Skyhawks, dropping their record to 2-6 (1-3 WILA) on the season.
The Mavs were able to get on the board first at 26:42 thanks to a goal from
Rachael Sutton, but a three goal burst from the Skyhawks put them ahead 3-1 at 22:02 remaining in the first half. The Mavs were able to tie the score at 3-3 after Sutton's second goal and a goal from
Allie Henderson at 18:45 but it would be the closest the Mavs would get through the rest of the game. The Skyhawks would add two more goals to their total to go up 5-3 before a goal from
Lexie Chavez kept the score close for the Mavs at 5-4 with 16:49 left in the half. The offensive firepower from the Skyhawks, however, was too much as they went on an 8-0 run to close out the half, leaving the Mavs down 13-4 at the break.
The Mavs would show they still had some fight left in them after goals from Sutton and Chavez to inch them closer at 13-6 with 20:17 remaining the in game, but the Skyhawks would not allow the Mavs to find a tempo as they closed out the game on a 7-goal run, making the final score 20-6.
Sutton and Chavez led the offensive effort for the Mavs as Sutton scored 3 goals on 5 shots with 1 assist, 3 groundballs, and 3 draw controls, and Chavez finished with 2 goals on 3 shots with 2 groundballs and 1 draw control.
Lauren Elliott led the defensive effort for the Mavs as she had a team high 2 caused turnovers and 5 groundballs.
Lauren Wells spent the entire game in the net as she earned the decision while picking up 12 saves and a team high 10 groundballs.
