Colorado Mesa (15-11, 13-9 RMAC) split Saturday's doubleheader versus Colorado Christian (18-13, 14-4 RMAC) winning game one 3-2 (10 innings) before falling in game two 4-2.
Taylor Gross' walk-off double in the bottom of the tenth inning propelled the Mavericks to a 3-2 win over first place Colorado Christian in game one at Bergman Field on Saturday afternoon.
CMU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Lita Romero, scoring Megan Smith (reached on error). The Cougars tied the game in the fifth and took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning. CMU extended the game on a bases loaded walk to Lisa Pille scoring Jessica Albertson (single). CCU closed out the inning doubling-up off a line drive hit and throwing out the runner at third base.
CCU registered two hits in the eighth, one hit in the ninth and was set-down in the tenth. CMU was hitless in each of the eighth and ninth innings and started off the tenth with back-to-back fly outs. Tawnee Woosley single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Mackenzy Derrick walked and Gross' double to right center scored the winning run.
CMU was out-hit by the Cougars 13-6 with starting CCU pitcher walking eight Mav batters.
CMU's Courtney Maihi (9-6) pitched 10.0 innings walking just one and striking out two for the victory.
In game two the Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead through four innings behind starting pitcher Mariah Bledsoe. CMU scored one run in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the Cougar lead to 4-2. CMU loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out before the Cougars sealed the win with an inning-ending double-play.
CMU scored two runs on 10 hits and the Cougars had four runs on 10 hits. Tawnee Woosley went 3 for 3 with one RBI. Courtney Maihi was 2 for 3 and one RBI.
The Mavericks and Cougars will play two on Sunday, beginning at 11 am.
