The Colorado Mesa University Men's Lacrosse team took on the Rollins College Tars over the weekend as the Mavericks completed their East Coast road trip.
It was a disappointing day for the Mavericks as they lost the game 9-7 to conclude the road trip with a record of 2-1, putting them at 3-2 on the season.
The Tars struck first at 9:20 in the first quarter before the Mavericks responded with a goal of their own at 1:19 to tie the score at the end of the first. The Mavericks went up early in the second quarter with a goal at 11:13 but the Tars were able to tie it up 2-2 with 2:48 left in the half. The Mavericks added one more goal to their tally to go up 3-2 at the half.
The Tars struck fast and early as they tied the game at 3-3 with a goal in the first six seconds of the half, the Tars added another goal at 12:01 left in the 3rd. The Mavericks responded with two quick goals of their own coming less than a minute apart to retake the lead 5-4 with 6:34 remaining in the 3rd. The scoring wasn't done, however, as the Tars were able to tie up the score again at 6:21 before the Mavericks took the lead back at 4:50 to go up 6-5; the Tars were able to tie the game again at 3:23 at 6-6 heading into the 4th. The Mavericks added one more goal to their total to go up 7-6, but it would be the last time they had the lead as the Tars scored 3 unanswered goals to make the score 9-7 final.
The offensive effort was led by Josh Russell and Daniel Caddoo. Russell finished the game with 2 goals on 4 shots while Caddoo finished with 1 goal on 3 shots with 1 assist and 2 groundballs. Other Mavericks that scored were Trace Wollner, Griffin Perkiel, Gabe Garcia, and Aaron Eggiman, all of which ended up with 1 goal.
The defensive effort was led by Johnny Nitti as he finished the game with 7 groundballs and 1 caused turnover. Brad Brandenburg and Zach Weaver split time in the goal as Brandenburg finished with 7 saves in the first half and Weaver, who earned the decision, finished with 4 saves in the second half.
The Mavericks continue their season on March 23rd, as they take on the Lindenwood University Lions at Walker Field.
