Mavs Power Past Mountain Lions in Sunday Sweep

Colorado Mesa (14-10, 12-8 RMAC) swept Sunday's doubleheader  in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action dominating UC-Colorado Springs (10-12, 8-10)  at Mountain Lion Field in Colorado Springs. CMU took game one 12-9 and game two 14-4 in five innings.

CMU scored nine runs on 13 hits on the way to a 12-9 victory over the Mountain Lions in game one. The Mavericks scored at least one run in all but the sixth inning and shut down UCCS after allowing the Mountain Lions five runs in the second inning. CMU held a 4-0 lead heading in to the bottom of the second when the UCCS Lions scored five runs on three hits to take a 5-4 lead. CMU regained the lead (6-5) in the third with two runs and extended the lead to 8-5 after the top of the fourth. UCCS scored a run in the bottom half of the fourth (6-8) before the Mavs added a run in the fifth and three runs in the seventh including a three-run homerun by Taylor Gross to push the lead to 12-6. Gross hit a solo homerun to lead off the fourth and her first two-homerun game her career. UCCS' Emily Jennings' three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh closed the gap to 12-9 before the Mavs retired the final two batters.

Taylor Gross went 4 for 5 with three runs and five RBI. Danielle Vallie went 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI. Megan Smith finished 2 for 4 with three RBI and Shannon McClenahan tallied two hits, three runs and an RBI.

Courtney Maihi improved to 7-5 overall while allowing nine runs on nine hits, four walks and six strikeouts.

In series finale CMU's Ashley Pulido allowed eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts as the Mavericks scored at least one run in the first four innings in the 14-4 win. CMU scored six runs in the first inning including a two-run homerun by Carson Cooper. The Mavs put up four runs on three hits in the second and added one run in the third inning for an 11-0 lead.

Lisa Pille led off the fourth with a solo homerun and the Mavs went on to score three runs on one hit for a 14-0 lead. UCCS walked two, committed on error and had a wild pitch that led to the three-run inning.

The Mountain Lions got on the board in the fourth with four runs on six hits to avoid the shutout.

Lisa Pille went 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs. Shannon McClenahan was 2 for 5 with five RBI and two runs. Carson Cooper and Jessica Albertson each had two hits and combined for four runs and two RBI.

CMU returns home next weekend to host league-leading Colorado Christian University. Saturday's doubleheader begins at Noon.
