Colorado Mesa (12-10, 10-8 RMAC) split a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games at UC-Colorado Springs (10-10, 8-8) on Saturday afternoon at Mountain Lion Field in Colorado Springs. UCCS won game one 3-1 and CMU answered back, taking game two by the score of 14-6 in a run-rule six inning game.
UC-Colorado Springs scored one run in the bottom of the first and extended the lead to 3-0 scoring two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run homerun by Emily Jennings.
CMU's lone run came in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI double by Taylor Gross scoring Lita Romero (fielder's choice). UCCS closed out the game on a ground out and a 3-0 victory.
The Mountain Lions scored three runs on seven hits and handed starting pitcher Courtney Maihi her fifth loss of the season (6-5). CMU tallied four hits in game one.
In game two the Mountain Lions took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, only to see the Maverick explode for six runs in the top of the third and a 6-1 advantage. Bottom of the third and the Mountain Lions put up four runs on three hits to close the CMU lead to one run (6-5). UCCS tied the game in the fourth on a solo homerun by Lara Mathewson off reliever Ashley Pulido.
A two-out, two RBI double by Taylor Gross in the fifth regained the lead for the Mavs at 8-6. Gross' double scored Shannon McClenahan (single) and Tawnee Woosley (single). Gross scored on a Danielle Vallie single and Courtney Maihi's three-run blast pushed CMU's lead to 12-6. Meagan Smith followed with a solo homerun for a seven-run inning on eight hits. CMU added a run in the sixth and shut down the Mountain Lions in the bottom half of the inning for the 14-6 victory.
CMU pounded out 20 hits in the six-inning affair. UCCS finished with six runs on 10 hits and three errors. Every Maverick batter had at least one hit and seven of the nine batters had multiple hits. Shannon McClenahan was 4 for 4 with two runs and one RBI. Danielle Vallie and Lisa Pille each went 3 for 4 and combined for three RBI and three runs. Taylor Gross went 2 for 5 and three RBI. Gross' two-out double started the Mavs' seven-run inning in the fifth.
Ashley Pulido picked up the victory and stands at 2-3 on the year. Pulido came on in relief for 3.0 innings of work, allowing one run on two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
CMU and UCCS will play two on Sunday beginning at 11 am.
