The Colorado Mesa University Women's Lacrosse team took on the Urbana University Blue Knights on Tuesday as the Mavericks continue their second season in Division II lacrosse.
It was a good day for the Mavericks as they finally notched their first road victory of the year.
CMU was up early in the first, jumping out to a 4-0 lead with 22:43 left in the half before they traded goals with the Blue Knights until halftime to stay up 7-4. The Blue Knights struck first in the second half with a goal at 24:05, but that would be the closest they would get the rest of the way. The Mavericks responded with 5 straight goals to go up 12-5 with 13:58 left in the game before the Blue Knights added 2 more goals near the end of the game; the final score was 12-7 in favor of the Mavs.
The offensive effort was spearheaded by Amanda Simon and Allie Henderson; Simon led the Mavs with 3 goals on 7 shots with 2 assists, 1 groundball, 2 draw controls and 1 caused turnover as Henderson also had 3 goals coming on 6 shots with 3 draw controls and 2 caused turnovers while going 1-1 on free position shots. Rachael Sutton continues to show she can be one of the best as she had 2 goals on 3 shots with 4 groundballs, 4 draw controls, and 3 caused turnovers while also going 1-1 on free position shots; Tayler Lansdown rounded out the offensive effort with 2 goals on 3 shots with one goal coming from a free position shot.
Lexie Chavez and Kate Diamond also had one goal apiece for the Mavs while Chavez and Keri Kopchik earned 1 assist each.
Myka Wiebe led the defensive effort for the Mavs as she snagged 4 groundballs and 1 draw control while also causing 3 turnovers; Lauren Wells earned the decision as she spent the entire game in the net while picking up 10 saves.
The Mavericks continue their season on March 15 when they take on the Millersville University Marauders in a neutral site contest.
