The Colorado Mesa University Men's Lacrosse team took on the University of Tampa Spartans on Tuesday as the Mavericks continue their second season in Division II lacrosse.
The Mavericks opened up their east coast road trip with a strong victory over the Spartans as they picked up their first road victory of the season.
The Mavericks struck first in the first quarter as they took a 1-0 lead into the second. The Mavericks picked up two more goals less than two minutes apart to go up 3-0 with 9:19 left in the second quarter. The Spartans got on the board with 3:31 left in the second as the Mavericks took the 3-1 lead into the half.
The Mavericks added two more goals to their total to go up 5-1 heading into the final quarter. The Mavericks picked up their 6th goal with 11:34 remaining in the game as the Spartans finally responded with a goal of their own with 6:55 left. The Mavericks got their final goal with 4:31 left in the game as the Spartans added to more to their total in the last 3 minutes of the game; the final score was 7-4.
The offensive effort for the Mavericks was led by Daniel Caddoo and Kyle Wollenhaupt; Caddoo scored 3 of the Maverick's goals on 5 shots while Wollenhaupt earned 2 goals on 3 shots with 2 assists, 1 groundball and 1 caused turnover. Trace Wollner and Austin Pridham each had 1 goal apiece as Josh Russell notched 2 assists and Aaron Eggiman earned 1 assist.
The defensive effort was led by Johnny Nitti and Stuart Foster; Nitti snagged 3 groundballs while causing 2 turnovers and Foster picked up 2 groundballs with 1 caused turnover. Brad Brandenburg spent the entire game in the goal for the Mavericks as he earned the decision while stopping 17 shots.
The Mavericks continue their road trip on March 15 when they take on the Florida Tech Panthers in Melbourne, Florida.
