Colorado Mesa (10-8, 8-6 RMAC) split Sunday's doubleheader and wrapped up a four game series with a split versus Black Hills State (4-13, 4-8 RMAC) at Bergman Field. In Sunday's doubleheader the Mavs shutout the Yellow Jackets 8-0 behind a one-hitter by CMU starter Courtney Maihi. The Mavs dropped the series finale 2-0.
Maihi did not allow a hit until the seventh inning when a lead-off double by Katie Wagner broke up the no-hitter. Maihi allowed three walks and struck out four in 5.0 innings. CMU scored one run in the first on a homerun by Jessica Albertson. The Mavs scored six runs on five hits in the second inning for a 7-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles by Lisa Pille and Tawnee Woosley to lead off the inning forced a pitching change by the Yellow Jackets. Lita Romero's bunt single scored Rachel Boothe (walk). Romero stole home and a two-run blast by Maihi scored Albertson (walk). CMU added a run in the fourth to close out the scoring.
Maihi was 2 for 3 with one run and two RBI. Romero was 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI.
Black Hills State bounced back early in game two scoring the only runs of the game in the first inning. The Yellow Jackets scored two unearned runs in the first inning and made it stand as they held the Mavericks scoreless on four hits.
Maihi was credited with the loss allowing four hits, two runs (unearned), three walks and four strikeouts. Taylor Gross was 2 for 3; while Albertson and Maihi tallied one hit each in the game.
CMU will travel to Fort Lewis College for a doubleheader on Thursday. The Mavericks will play a four game series at UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday and Sunday.
