Slotten, Retana Lead Mavericks to Win over #9 Grizzlies

            The Colorado Mesa University wrestling team came off a loss to CSU-Pueblo on Thursday night, looking to redeem themselves against 9th ranked Adams State. The Mavericks were able to upend #9 Adams State 22-17 winning 6 of the 9 contested matches. Colorado Mesa moves its records 8-9 overall and 3-3 in RMAC duals.
            157 pounder Jon Gappmaier was looking to take the season edge over Grizzly Daniel Kelly. Gappmaier beat Kelly at the Wyoming Cowboy Open while Kelly got the best of Gappmaier in the Northern Colorado Open. Jon was able to take the upper hand with a 7-4 win and moved his record to 25-6 on the season and 7-0 in the RMAC while Kelly falls to 16-10 and 5-3 in the RMAC. At the time, the win cut the Grizzly lead to 14-6 in the dual.
            In the 'Match of the Night,' Maverick Zak Slotten and Grizzly Jarrod Purvis went 3 overtimes and nearly 12 minutes on the mat before the match was settled. Both wrestlers battled to a 1-1 tie through 3 periods, then both remained tied through the first  and second set of overtimes. In the third overtime, Slotten was able to keep Purvis down through the first 30 second period, then it was Slotten's turn to take the down position. Slotten was able to escape and put Purvis to his back. With 6 seconds left, Slotten earned the pin at the 11:54 mark of the match and gave the Mavericks a 15-14 lead.
            The dual came down to the 285 pound match with Maverick Paco Retana set to square off with Grizzly Taylor Stam. Paco was able to turn and expose Stam's back twice in the match and was able to pull off the 12-4 win and seal the victory for the Mavericks in the dual 22-17.
            The win was the first for the Mavericks over the Grizzlies since the program was reinstated in 2006.
            The Mavericks will be on the road for the rest of the season. Next week, they will travel to take on nationally ranked Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney.
