Mavs Fall in Overtime to Lopers 75-70

Colorado Mesa women's basketball (8-12, 6-10 RMAC) fell on the road at University of Neb.-Kearney (6-15, 6-10 RMAC) in Kearney Friday afternoon. The game was moved up two hours due to inclement weather and to help accommodate CMU travel plans.

UNK led 31-30 at half behind Vanessa Jones' 24-first half points. The Lopers forced 14 CMU turnovers in the first half. CMU's biggest lead was five points and the Lopers held a four point advantage on two occasions. Kelsey Sigl led the Mavericks with 11 points in the first 20 minutes.

 The two teams stayed within single digits of each other in the second half. UNK held Sigl scoreless until the 8:40 mark of the second half when Sigl scored on a put-back off an offensive rebound and fouled. The layup and free throw gave CMU a three point lead (53-50).

 UNK tied the game at 57-57 with 5:31 remaining in regulation as the Mavericks led until eight seconds remaining in the game. CMU led 64-61 as UNK pulled down a rebound off a missed free throw and drained a trey (64-64) as time expired, sending the game in to overtime.

UNK's Debi Johnson scored first in the OT hitting a 3-pointer at the 4:11 mark. Johnson extended the lead to five points on a jumper for its largest lead in the game (69-64). CMU pulled to within two on a layup by Hanna Bowden (69-66) only to have the Lopers answer back on a layup by Vanessa Jones (71-66).  Sigl's two free throws with 2:10 remaining pulled CMU to within three (68-71). With 1:05 left UNK's Lee Ann Jameson sank both free throws and a five point lead (73-68). UNK extended the lead to seven 75-68 on free throws by Shelby Zimmerman. Sigl scored the final basket with 19-seconds left to and close out the game, falling short 75-70.

 Sigl led the Mavericks with 22 points. Hanna Bowden had game high 14 rebounds and scored 10 points. Amy Weitzeil finished 5 for 5 from the floor for 10 points. Leanndra Gilbert had 10 points and two rebounds off the bench.

 UNK's Vanessa Jones finished with a game high 30 points and team high eight rebounds.  UNK was 14 of 14 from the foul line. CMU finished 9 of 15 from the free throw line.

 CMU will play at Chadron State on Saturday.
