Colorado Mesa softball (6-2, 4-0 RMAC) defeated visiting CSU-Pueblo (2-6, 0-4 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader at Bergman Field. The Mavericks won game one 3-0 and completed the series sweep in a 9-6 win in game two on Sunday's doubleheader.
Ashley Pulido pitched a complete game shutout in game one for her first win (1-0) of the season. Pulido allowed four hits and struck out four.
CMU scored in 1 run in the fourth and 2 runs in the fifth on 7 hits for the 3-0 victory. Six players registered a hit and Jessica Albertson notched two hits (2-3) and scored a run. Danielle Vallie, Lauren Cross and Lisa Pille each went 1 for 3 with one RBI a piece.
In game two CMU's Courtney Maihi improved to 3-2 on the year going 5.1 innings and allowing six runs (5 earned) on 10 hits, one walk and one strikeout. Ashley Pulido pitched 1.2 innings of relief for her first save of the season. Pulido shutout the T-Wolves and struck out 3 batters.
CMU scored 9 runs on 11 hits scoring five runs in the first inning and four in the fourth. CSU-Pueblo took a 1-0 lead in the first and the Mavericks answered back with 5 runs in the bottom of the first. CSUP closed the gap to 5-3 with 2 runs on 3 hits in the third inning.
In the fourth Lauren Cross' double to left field scored two runs (Taylor Gross-walk, Jessica Albertson-single). A single by Megan Smith scored Cross for the third run of the inning. Two batters later Lita Romero's single advanced Pille (single) to second and Smith scored for a 9-3 lead.
CSUP scored a run in the fifth (9-4) on a homerun and scored two runs in the sixth on 3 hits, including a solo homerun to pull to within 9-6. Pulido would close out the game in relief and seal the series sweep.
Jessica Albertson was 3 for 3 and Lauren Cross and Courtney Maihi had two hits each and combined for five RBI and four runs. Megan Smith was 2 for 4 and 3 RBI and two runs.
CMU will travel to New Mexico Highlands this weekend for a four game set in Las Vegas, N.M.
