Colorado Mesa softball defeated Black Hills State 14-6 (5 innings) on day one of the NSIC/RMAC Crossover Tournament hosted by CSU-Pueblo. The Mavs beat #13 Minnesota State earlier in the day 3-2.
CMU scored at least one run in each inning and put up seven runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. The Mavs scored three runs in the first on an RBI double by Danielle Vallie (Lita Romero-triple) followed by a two-run homerun by Lauren Cross.
Black Hills State scored one run in the bottom of the first and the Mavs scored one in the top half of the second for a 4-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets took a 5-4 lead after two innings scoring four runs in the inning including a three-run homerun with two outs. CMU added a run in the third to tie the game at 5-5 and again the Yellow Jackets matched it in the bottom half to again take a one-run lead (6-5).
CMU scored two runs in the fourth on two hits and a 7-6 lead. The Mavericks scored the go-ahead run when Shannon McClenahan stole home.
After a scoreless fourth inning for BHSU, the Mavs put up seven runs on four hits in the top of the fifth for a 14-6 lead. Danielle Vallie's grand slam closed the door on the Yellow Jackets. Mackenzy Derrick hit her first collegiate homerun with one out in the fifth. McClenahan's single scored Lisa Pille (walk) and Tawnee Woosley (fielder's choice). A single by Taylor Gross and a walk to Lita Romero loaded the bases for Vallie's grand slam.
Black Hills State had a runner on second and third with one out before CMU closed the door with a foul out to first base and line out to centerfield.
CMU pounded out 14 hits including three hits from Danielle Vallie and two hits each by Tawnee Woosley and Shannon McClenahan. Eight Mavs had recorded a hit. Vallie finished 3 for 4, three runs scored and 5 RBI.
Catherine Floyd earned win number one as a Maverick. She went 4.0 innings and allowed six runs (5 earned) on eight hits. Ashley Pulido pitched 1.0 inning, giving up two hits and striking out one.
CMU will return to the diamond on Saturday for a matchup with Winona State at Noon.
