The Colorado Mesa University Wrestling team concluded its Kansas-Nebraska road trip on Friday night with a dual against the 4th ranked Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. The Lopers showed why they are a national power year in and year out, beating the 20th ranked Mavericks 31-6. CMU managed only two wins in the 10 matches with the Lopers taking 4 of their matches by bonus points. The Mavericks record dips to 8-11 on the season and 3-5 in RMAC duals.
Tyler Nelson picked up a win at 133 pounds over the Lopers Stephen Weimer in the secon overtime period 3-1. Last season, Nelson defeated Weimer in the closing seconds at the NCAA Regional Tournament to clinch a trip to the NCAA National Championships. Nelson is now 16-9 on the season and finished the road swing 2-0.
Zak Slotten was the Mavericks other winner on the night, defeating UNK's Mark Fiala 5-2. Like Nelson, Slotten finished the road trip 2-0 and improved to 20-10 on the season.
Next week, Colorado Mesa will close out the RMAC Dual season with a dual on Wednesday against the Colorado Mines Orediggers. After that, the NCAA Regional Tournament in Hays, Kansas at the end of the month to determine who will earn a trip to the NCAA National Championships.
