CMU Wins Season Opener over Simon Fraser 62-45

Colorado Mesa women's basketball opened the 2012-13 season with a 62-45 victory over Simon Fraser University at the Dixie State Tip-Off Tournament in St. George, Utah.

CMU held a 29-23 halftime advantage led by Kelsey Sigl's 10-first half points hitting 5 of 6 from the field. Simon Fraser scored the first point of the game on a free throw and never led again in the first 20 minutes of action. The Clan tied the game at 14-14 at the 8:12 mark before the Mavs went on a 6-0 run for a 20-14 lead. CMU pushed the lead to 25-16 with 2:01 remaining in the first half. Simon Fraser closed out the final minutes of the half with a 7-2 spurt; hitting five three throws and a jumper with two-seconds on the clock.

The second half was all CMU after the two teams went scoreless for the first 3:22 to open the half. The Mavericks got on the board on back-to-back jumpers by Sharaya Selsor and Sigl to push the Mav lead to 10 points (33-23). Simon Fraser closed the gap to 34-38 at the 12:28 mark.

The Mavericks held the Clan scoreless on several stretches in the second half as CMU went from a 47-36 lead at 8:24 to 52-36 advantage with 6:52 remaining. Simon Fraser went scoreless for over four minutes and was again held without a basket in the final 3:52 of the contest.

CMU had three players register double-digit figures. Katrina Selsor led all players with 19 points and a team high eight rebounds. Kelsey Sigl finished with 17 points and six boards. Sharaya Selsor added 12 points and five rebounds on the night.

Simon Fraser was led by Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe's 14 points and nine rebounds.

CMU will play Montana State University Billings on Saturday at 1 p.m.
