The Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer team ended their four-match road swing in Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon with a match against the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs. After 110 minutes, CMU and UCCS finished in a 2-2 tie. The tie sends the Mavericks record to 8-1-3 on the season and 5-1-2 in the RMAC, while the Mountain Lions are 9-2-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the RMAC.
The Mavericks started the scoring in the early minutes of the first half when
Veronica Rodriguez scored in the 7th minute of the match. Rodriguez took a shot from around 30 yards out and scored over the goalie's head. Her second goal of the season was assisted by
Sarah Pope and
Kelci Crispe (18 in her career) and gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
In the 38th minute of the match,
Jessica Kent scored her second goal of the season off of a corner kick. Kent scored on a header that was headed to her by
Daniela Salinas which found the back of the net. The goal gave the Mavericks a 2-0 advantage.
Just before halftime, Mountain Lion Jessie Greulich scored her first goal of the season to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.
UCCS got the equalizer in the 56th minute of the match when Jade Hilbert scored her third goal of the season to knot the match at 2-2.
That would be the way the match would end. In their past four meetings now, the Mavericks and Mountain Lions have played to four straight overtime matches with the Mavericks winning the first three meetings.
Colorado Mesa now sits in second place in the RMAC standings with 17 points, two behind RMAC leader Metro State and one ahead of UCCS and Regis.
Next week, the Mavericks will take on Colorado Mines on Friday at Walker Field. Then on Sunday, they will travel to Durango to take on arch rival Fort Lewis.
