“Get to 25 before they do, three times.” That was Coach Fleming's game plan heading into the 16th meeting between his Maverick team, and the Chadron State Eagles. The Mavericks swept the Eagles in three Friday night (25-23, 29-27,25-23).
Friday night the game between the Mavericks (12-3, 6-1 RMAC) and Chadron State Eagles (3-13, 1-6 RMAC) was played in a very pink Brownson arena. In honor of Breast Cancer awareness month players, coaches, fans, and even referees filled Brownson sporting pink in honor of women fighting the disease. One of the women fighting the disease was freshman Christian Otzen's mother, Danatte Otzen made an honorary serve to start the game.
In the past 15 games against the Eagles, the Mavericks have not lost a single game.
The Eagles went blow for blow with the Mavericks in the first set. Coming off Christian Otzen's four kills, and Jordyn Moody's eight assists, the Mavs were able to pull out the win in the end 25-23.
The second set looked nothing like the first set at all. The Eagles took an 18-10 lead before the Mavericks began to rally back. The set would go into extra innings as the Eagles fought hard trying to win their first set of the night. “We weren't attacking.” Fleming said. “We were letting them do what they wanted to do offensively.”
Needing to win by two points past 25, the Eagles scratched and clawed only to fall 29-27 in the end. Once again Otzen led the Mavs with 8 kills while also recording six digs in the long set, Megan Rush tallied 12 kills and Jordyn Moody had 23 kills.
The third set started off with the Mavs scoring the first point. But just as in the first two sets, the Eagles hung surprisingly tough. Trailing the Eagles into the twenties, The Mavericks moved ahead as the two teams neared 25. In the end, the set would not go long like the second did, as the Mavs sewed up the sweep 24-23 over the Eagles.
With the win the Mavericks stay undefeated in their series against the Chadron State Eagles.
Saturday night the Mavericks are back home as they host Black Hills State (5-10, 0-6 RMAC)
