Mavs fall short against Cougars, 79-76

CMU (8-9, 6-7 RMAC) women's basketball team lost 79-76 at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood on Saturday night.

CMU trailed by seven points at half (35-42) but opened the second half on a 10-3 run to tie the game at 45-45 at the 16:03 mark. The Cougars answered back with a 12-4 spurt and an eight point lead (57-49) with 12:07 left in the game. CCU pushed the lead to nine points on two occasions; the last coming with just under 10-minutes remaining in regulation. In a span of two minutes the Mavericks ran off nine consecutive points to tie the game at 63-63.

In the final six minutes the lead changed hands on several occasions with no more than a three point lead by either team. CCU took a 75-74 lead with 53-second remaining and a steal on the ensuing CMU possession gave the Cougars the ball with 30-seconds remaining. A steal and layup by Kelsey Sigl with 23-seconds gave the Mavericks a one point lead (76-75). CMU was called for a foul on the next possession and the Cougars sank both free throws for a 77-76 lead. CCU would hit two more free throws with four seconds left to secure the win.

Kelsey Sigl finished with a game high 30 points, one short of her career high set earlier this season. Tara Gehring finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Amy Weitzeil had a game high eight rebounds and added six points. Dallas Rohrbaugh had nine points and two assists. Hanna Bowden stepped in to the starting lineup and finished with seven points and seven rebounds.

CMU was without their second leading scorer and top rebounder, Katrina Selsor, who was injured on Friday night at Colorado School of Mines.

The Mavericks will return home to host Regis University on Friday and Metro State College on Saturday night at Brownson Arena. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
