Mavericks Splits Double-Dual in Phoenix

        The Colorado Mesa Wrestling team concluded its Arizona road trip this evening with a double-dual in Phoenix against Embry-Riddle and 5th ranked Grand Canyon. The Mavericks defeated Embry-Riddle 35-12 but fell to Grand Canyon 21-11.

#18 Colorado Mesa 35, Embry Riddle 12

        The Mavericks won 8 of the ten matches with 5 coming for bonus points (3 falls and 2 majors). With the win, the Mavericks snap a mini four match losing skid coming off the tough weekend at the Grand Canyon Duals.
        Jon Gappmaier and Dylan Granard started the dual off with major decision wins. Gappmaier defeated Matt Hamilton 12-2 at 157 pounds and Granard beat Luke Riley 13-0 at 165 pounds to give the Mavericks the early 8-0 lead.
        Nick Petersen and Paco Retana picked up wins at 184 pounds and 285 pounds to stretch the CMU lead to 23-6. Trevor Donarski closed out the dual with a pin at 149 pounds to seal the win.

#5 Grand Canyon 21, #18 Colorado Mesa 11

        
Colorado Mesa faced off with RMAC foe and 5th ranked Grand Canyon in the night cap. The Mavericks won 4 of the 10 but the 'Lopes had three wins that came for bonus points to hold off the Mavericks.
        Jon Gappmaier might of had the biggest win of the dual in the night's opening match. Gappmaier defeated 4th ranked 157 pounder Teddy Bristol 11-6. Gappmaier improved his record to 15-6 on the season.
        197 pounder Jordan Passehl finished off a good weekend with a 7-5 win over Eric Fan. Passehl went 4-2 over the weekend and improved his season record to 9-9.
        Freshman Braden Humpherys picked up his first two varsity dual wins of his Mavericks career. Coming off a win against Embry-Riddle, Humpherys picked up a 9-3 win over Vince Herrera at 141 pounds. He is now 8-4 on the season.

        The Mavericks will compete in the Utah Valley Open this coming weekend before heading to Gunnison the following weekend to compete in the Tracy Borah Duals at Western State.
