In a game that means more than volleyball, the Mavericks weren't able to put their three-game losing streak to a stop with a 3-2 loss to Colorado Christian University in the Swing for Life game in Brownson Arena.
After the game, the Mavs' game-used pink jerseys were auctioned off, with 100% of the money raised going towards breast cancer research.
“It puts things in proper perspective,” Coach Dave Fleming said. “I mean, we aren't out here trying to find a cure for cancer. It's just a game at the end of the day. It helps us realize that we need to go home and kiss our loved ones and be happy with all of our opportunities and what we have in life.”
The ladies were able to hold off the late rally from the Cougars and 25-23 in the first game. Kelly Regimbal led the attack with six kills and an ace from her California-style serves. Antoinette McCormick, Rebecca Sellers and Rachael Beaty all contributed with three kills of their own. Jordyn Moody helped out with 16 assists and Captain Megan Rush had eight digs and three assists.
Game two went to the Cougars, 25-17, as they went up big early and never looked back. Regimbal added four more kills. McCormick didn't have any in the game two loss as Rush was only able to add one dig.
The third game was highly contested throughout, but the Cougars were able to score the final two points and win it 27-25. Regimbal had another four kills game and McCormick added three more. Moody set things up with 15 assists and Rush took the beating with eight assists in the third game loss.
It's definitely a mentality thing for us,” Regimbal said, explaining hers and McCormick's strong kills. “We go up just to rip and not worry about getting blocked. We kind of just go and hit it as hard as we can, honestly.”
In the fourth game, facing elimination, the Mavs stormed back late to win it 25-23. McCormick, who ended the game with a monster kill, had five kills in the game. Sellers added three more kills and Regimbal added two more. Moody had nine more assists and had an assist and three assists.
In the first five-game set in Brownson this year, the Mavs weren't able to climb out of an early hole and fall to Colorado Christian 15-12 in Game 5 and overall 3-2.
“I do think tonight was a better stand than this whole week,” Regimbal said. “We put out a better fight tonight. We came back from being down at least seven points so I don't think tonight was as bad as it has been.”
Regimbal led the team with 19 kills and added seven digs. McCormick finished with 12 kills and four digs and Sellers helped out with 13 kills and seven digs. Moody had 52 assists and nine digs for the Mavs. Rush led everyone with 25 digs.
“Tonight was a step in the right direction,” Regimbal said. “If we can just keep progressing from here I think we will just continue to go up.”
With the loss, the Mavs fall to 0-3 in the conference and 3-8 overall on the season. CMU will travel to Alamosa to take on Adams State before coming home the next day to take on future RMAC foe Black Hills State at 4 p.m. in Brownson Arena.
