Mavs fall to #25 Regis Rangers at home 3-1

After a disappointing start to a three game weekend against Metro St., the Mavericks looked to bounce back against nationally ranked #25 Regis University. However, the Rangers were able to pull away late and beat the Mavs 3-1.

This one hurts a little bit more,” Head Coach Dave Fleming said. “We looked great for five points then a junior high team for five points. We just have to figure out who we are.”

After a hot start by the Mavs, jumping out to a 12-9 lead in game one, Regis came storming back to take the lead later in the game. After a couple rallies from both sides, the Rangers were able to hold on and take the first game, 25-22.

The Mavs again got off to a hot start in Game two, and this time they were able to stay hot and crush the Rangers 25-16. Through the first two games, Rebecca Sellers and Melissa Hess tied for team highs in kills with six each. Sellers also added six digs. Jordyn Moody had 16 assists and eight digs to lead the Mavs. Captain Megan Rush had seven digs and two assists as Antoinette McCormick had five kills.

After another game full of rallies from both sides, the Mavericks were not able to win the highly contested third game 26-24. The Mavs had a 23-20 lead and then a 24-21 lead, but could not close it out. Hess had four kills and a dig in the game as Moody added nine more assists. Kelly Regimbal added four kills in the game three loss.

“This was a big game, we just got tentative with our swinging,” Fleming said. “We just have to hit the ball harder. That's our ammo; that's where we hit to kill.”

The Rangers were able to make the fourth game the final game as they pulled away late 25-16 and won the match 3-1. McCormick finished with 11 kills and four digs. Rush had a team high 27 digs and four assists. Moody had a team high in assists with 32 and 13 digs. Hess had 13 kills and Regimbal had nine kills.

“Rush played great, it was just too bad she couldn't get any help,” Fleming said. “This was probably the best night of her career. It was just disappointing we couldn't get the win.”

With the loss, the Mavs fall to 0-2 in conference play and 3-7 on the season. CMU will wrap up the weekend stretch tomorrow night in Brownson Arena as they host Colorado Christian University at 7 p.m.
