Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team opened the fall season with three duals versus RMAC foe Metro State College and CSU-Pueblo Friday at Pueblo's City Park. The Mavericks wrapped up the weekend against regional opponent University of Neb-Omaha.CMU posted a 1-2 record falling to Metro 8-1, CSU-Pueblo 6-3, before defeating UNO, 5-4.
CMU's Andres Hernandez defeated Metro's Gabriel Vlahos 6-4, 6-2, for the lone point in the non-conference dual match-up. The Roadrunners swept the three doubles matches before taking five of the six singles matches in each team's first match of the year.
Friday afternoon against host CSU-Pueblo the Mavs held a 2-1 lead after winning number 1 and 3 doubles over the T-Wolves. CMU won just one of the six singles matches with Alex Barrios beating Saul Shrom, 6-4, 6-2 at number 3 singles. CSU-P swept the remaining singles matches each in straight sets.
Against Neb.-Omaha the Mavericks jumped out to a 2-1 advantage winning at number 2 and 3 doubles, including a 9-7 win for Alex Barrios and Jonathan Casson at No. 2. CMU notched their first win of the season winning at number 2, 4 and six singles. Andres Hernandez (#2), Jonathan Casson (#4) and Forrest Kennel (#6) each won in straight sets as the Mavs held on for the 5-4 victory.
CMU will return to action September 29 at University of Neb.-Kearney in a dual match. September 30-October 2 CMU will compete in the ITA Regional Tournament hosted by Neb.-Kearney.
