Mesa State women's lacrosse team closed out their season with a 16-3 win over Adams State College Saturday afternoon in Alamosa. The win improved the Mavs' record to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association competition. Adams State dropped to 0-11, 0-6 in its first season.
MSC scored 12 goals in the first half for a 12-3 halftime lead. Taylor Lansdown scored first off a free position goal six minutes in to the game. ASC's Amanda Hisel tied the game a minute later before the Mavs went on a 10-0 run for an 11-1 lead with 4:46 remaining in the first half. Alexis Rawlings scored three consecutive goals, all free position shots for a 4-1 lead. Amanda Simon scored next on a free position shot. Lansdown, Rawlings scored within 30-seconds of each other and the Mavs extended the lead to 7-1 with 12:14 left in the half.
ASC held the Mavericks scoreless for over six minutes before Tara King scored her first goal of the day to start a four-goal flurry by the Mavs. Simon, Maria Heilner and Rawlings each scored pushing the lead to 11-1. The Grizzlies finally broke through scoring on back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 11-3. With 53-second left in the first half Rawlings scored her sixth goal of the half on a free position shot and a 12-3 halftime advantage.
MSC opened the second half with King scoring her second goal of the day just one minute in to the period. Simon scored on a free position goal for a 14-3 MSC lead. At the 16:00 mark Rawlings scored her seventh goal of the game and her 42nd of the season to extend the lead to 15-3. Simon closed out the game with a final goal, her fourth on the day and 32nd overall for a 16-3 MSC victory. Simon led the team with three assists on the day.
Rawlings led all players with seven goals, four off free position shots, to register 42 total goals on the year. She is tied for first in the WILA for goals scored.
MSC was 7 of 10 on free position shots and tallied 31 shots to the Grizzlies, 21. MSC held a 16-5 draw control advantage in the game.
MSC goalie Lauren Wells recorded 11 saves, five ground balls and faced 21 shots from the Grizzlies. Wells ranks third in Division II women's lacrosse in saves per game.
