Mesa State softball team (23-23) was eliminated by Western New Mexico 7-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament Friday afternoon in Golden, CO.
The Mustangs scored a run in the bottom of the second inning for a 1-0 lead that held up until the fifth when the Mavs scored a run to tie the game at 1-1. Megan Smith's single back to the pitcher advanced Lauren Cross (single) to third and Cross scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.
WNMU broke open the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Kale Gahn and two batters later, a bases loaded double by Ashley Eichenberger for a 5-1 lead.
MSC threatened in the six with a one-out double by Taylor Gross. With two outs Gabriella Parra reached on a fielding error and Gross scored on a throwing error to pull to within 5-2. Cross' single up the middle scored Parra to cut the Mustang lead to 5-3. Sara Jordan's pop up to the shortstop closed out the inning.
The Mustangs added a run in the sixth on back-to-back doubles to extend the lead to 6-3. A single put runners on first and third with one out. Gahn's sacrifice fly scored a run for a 7-3 Mustang lead, before the Mavs could set down the final batter.
The Mavericks led off the seventh inning with a single by Smith. WNMU's starting pitcher Sarah Byrne put down the next two batters before Lita Romero's RBI triple cut the lead to 7-4. The Mustangs sealed the victory with a game-ending strikeout.
WNMU scored seven runs on 11 hits off starting pitcher Sara Jordan. MSC registered four runs on seven hits.
