Mesa State women's lacrosse (3-9) team fell to Colorado College (13-3) 16-11 Saturday afternoon in a non-league game in Colorado Springs.
The Tigers never trailed in the game and outshot the Mavericks 41-27 in the contest. CC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 3:30 of the game before MSC's Amanda Simon scored to make it 3-1 in favor of the Tigers. Colorado College extended the lead to 5-1 on back-to-back free position goals by Lara Atkins and Sarah Phillips.
Tara King and Simon scored on consecutive goals to pull to within 5-3 with 17:59 remaining in the first period. After a CC goal pushed the Tiger lead to 6-3 the Mavs went on a three-goal streak to tie the game at 6-6. Taylor Lansdown scored at the 12:28 mark and a free position goal by Maria Heilner cut the deficit to one, 6-5. Thirty second later Allie Henderson scored to tie the game at 6-6.
CC scored twice with under two minutes remaining in the half to take an 8-6 lead at intermission.
The Tigers opened the second half on Phillips' third goal of the day for a 9-6 lead. MSC's Simon and Alexis Rawlings scored to close the Tiger lead to one; but CC answered back with three straight goals and a 12-8 lead. Rawlings free position goal cut the Tiger lead to 12-9 and then another CC surge of three consecutive goals pushed the Tiger lead to 15-9.
MSC scored twice more on consecutive goals by Heilner and Rawlings (11-15). CC scored the final goal despite playing one player down to close out the game and notch a 16-11 home victory.
Simon and Rawlings each scored three times for the Mavs. Heilner added two goals and had four draw controls. Henderson led the team with five draw controls and Lauren Wells tallied four ground balls.
Wells recorded 18 saves including 11 in the second half.
MSC will close out their inaugural season at Adams State next Saturday.
