Western New Mexico clinched the RMAC west division title with a 10-2 victory in game one Sunday afternoon at Bergman Field. The Mustangs took game two 6-1 taking 3 of 4 from the Mavericks in the final regular season series.
The Mustangs took a 6-1 lead after two innings scoring two in the first and four runs on five hits in the second inning. The game remained scoreless until the sixth when WNMU's Brittney Batten hit a lead-off homerun for a 7-1 lead. MSC added a run in the bottom half on an RBI single by Lisa Pille to cut the deficit to 7-2. The Mustangs tacked on three runs in the seventh on a three-run homerun by Sarah Byrne.
Taylor Gross, Gabriella Parra and Megan Smith combined for six of the Mavericks seven hits, each recording two.
Sarah Jordan took the loss pitching a complete game; allowing 10 runs on 11 hits, one walk and striking out four.
In game two each team scored a run in the first inning and remained tied until the Mustangs put up one run in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth inning to beat the Mavericks 6-1. WNMU tallied 12 hits while holding MSC to five hits.
Ashley Pulido dropped to 5-3 on the year allowing six runs on 12 hits, walking one and striking out one.
MSC will travel to Golden, Colorado this Thursday for the RMAC Tournament which runs Thursday – Saturday; hosted by Colorado School of Mines. The RMAC league office will release the bracket Monday morning.
